A Perspective on the Scaling of Magnetosheath Turbulence and Effects of Bow Shock Properties

Abstract We analyze magnetic field data from two magnetosheath crossings, representative of a larger collection similar cases in the database Cluster spacecraft. apply novel analysis method to identify power-law behavior structure functions and find validity range scaling. validate technique with solar wind synthetic signal. This approach grants rigorous determination scale for linear fit function log–log representation, which most often is chosen arbitrarily. The fitting allows an estimation power spectral index variation second-order exponent. Data recorded during first crossing, called Event 1, indicate three different scaling regimes (injection, inertial, kinetic) separated by breaks, consistent scenario fully developed turbulence. However, second 2, depict only determined fit. A slope shallower than Kolmogorovian at magnetohydrodynamic scales, spanning more frequency decades, break kinetic regime. An simultaneous Advanced Composition Explorer suggests that fluctuations might be controlled bow shock; turbulent are partially destroyed while they carried across shock.
